Thank you for considering my nomination to represent you as a District 5 delegate.

Briefly, I am an Anesthesiologist at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga.  Currently I am on the Executive of the Professional Staff Association and over the past several years I have been the site lead for our Pre-Op Clinic.  In 2014, I received the THP Better Together Physician Award for demonstrating leadership in advancing collaborative practice in the clinic.

Over the last two years I have been a vocal advocate promoting physician interests with the OMA and the government.  I have been active on social media including Twitter, Facebook and via my blog.  My efforts have also included writing letters to and meeting with MPPs and submitting letters to the editor; I attended council meetings as an observer twice in the last year, which has given me a better understanding of their process and structure.   I have also provided feedback and suggested ways of better representation at the OMA listening tours.

Despite our collective efforts and heavy criticism, there continues to be widespread dissatisfaction with how the OMA represents its members.  Repeated attacks by our Health Minister have largely gone without response.  This type of defamation and vilification is disrespectful and should not be tolerated by our representing body.  Our relationship with the government is terrible.  A majority of members do not have confidence in the OMA to represent us in negotiating the next Physician Services Agreement.

There is much work to be done.  I would like your support to work with the other delegates to help transform and build an OMA that better represents physicians’ interests.  I firmly believe that the OMA can do a better job and that we need to hold the OMA to a higher standard.  Some changes that I would push for, include:

  • A stronger and bold presence with more aggressive, tactful representation

  • A governance structure where the President elect is not nominated by the Board, leading to greater accountability

  • An OMA that represents physicians’ interests first

  • An OMA that can respond quickly to a rapidly changing environment

  • I support de-RANDing.  Our Association should provide quality products and services that make it worthwhile to voluntarily pay

  • Professional and savvy spokespeople to represent us to the media

  • More transparent and consistent communication

It is important now more than ever to have great representation as what we do today will impact us for many years into the future.  Let’s build a reputation that we can be proud of.  Let’s stand strong and united when it comes to dealing with the government.
